A massive earthquake has struck Los Angeles on the day the country celebrates Independence Day.
A preliminary measurement has given the strength at magnitude 6.6.
Hundreds of people on Twitter have commented on how long the earthquake struck for.
There is not thought to be any tsunami warning in place.
American actress Lucy Hale tweeted: I know everyone’s tweeting about this LA earthquake but that s*** was super long. I’m shook. Literally."
The epicentre of the tremor was 17km from Ridgecrest in the state of California, near Death Valley.
The earthquake struck at roughly 9.36am local time.
According to the Los Angeles Times that if the magnitude is confirmed as 6.6 this will be the first California quake in five years that is or stronger than a magnitude 6.
Singer Conor Maynard wrote on Twitter: "In LA, just experienced my first ever earthquake.. on the 12th floor of a building that was literally swaying like crazy.
"Mother Nature, that was definitely an experience, but I think I’m good for life now".
Any injuries or damage to property is yet to be reported.
